Team

N&R has one of the strongest teams of silvicultural brain power and field muscle on the British Columbia coast. The team consists of four forest professionals and five technicians on staff, plus several associates. Additional capacity is anticipated.


Jim Hunt, BSc, MSc, RPF — Owner/Manager

Jim is a senior forestry professional with a record of both local and international experience in the areas of silviculture, research, and contract administration. He has a solid background in developing new ideas to improve forest practices. Jim’s strengths are analysis and problem solving. Jim also offers clients well-developed written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. During his work with the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada, and as an independent consultant, Jim produced many technical, research, and extension reports.


Richard Timm — Operations Manager

Richard is a co-founder of N&R. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the local geography and silviculture. Richard has managed large programs such as silviculture surveys and planting projects. As well, he has completed and supervised all manner of post-harvest activities such as sowing requests, layout, traversing, mapping, forest health assessments, cone collections, contract tendering, wildlife/danger tree assessments, administration of spacing, pruning, fertilization, research trial establishment and re-measurement, database management, etc. He is also a GENUS master.


Chris Nunn, BSc, RPF — Silviculture Forester

Chris has handled much of the professional work over the last few years including amendments, Site Plans, Pest Management Plans, and co-ordination of Richply’s silviculture program. He has prepared a dozen Pest Management Plans and he has gained considerable experience with First Nations consultations. Chris’s history with N&R goes back to 1988 as the first employee. He has spent some interim time working for Interfor and WFP as an operations forester.


Doug Bacala, RPF — Silviculture Forester

Doug recently joined N&R after retiring from 27 years in silviculture and planning at the Ministry of Forests in the Squamish District. Doug brings a wealth of local knowledge and expertise.


Wesley Staven, BSF, FIT — Planting Co-ordinator

Wes co-ordinates all the planting administration including development of planting prescriptions, sowing requests, stock purchasing, contract preparation, Plant Wizard management, field monitoring, auditing, reporting, etc. He has experience running silviculture programs for industry, as well as strong computer, analytical, and report-writing skills.


Matt Day — Survey Co-ordinator

Matt is responsible for planning and co-ordinating a survey program that exceeds 6,000 ha and includes several clients. Matt also assists with a variety of coastal silviculture duties including planting and brushing implementation, creek cleaning, monitoring and implementing aerial and manual fertilization, and cone collecting. He is also a certified Wildland Fire Safety Danger Tree Assessor. He has 16 years of silviculture experience in British Columbia.


Joel Douglas — Brushing Co-ordinator

Joel’s background is in supervising planting and brushing crews. His main duties are silviculture surveying and assisting with the planting and brushing programs.


Kathi Hagan, BA — Editor/Writer

Kathi is a technical writer and editor with many years of experience in the forest industry. She assists with preparing documents and reports.


Norman Caldicott, BSF, RPF

Norman Caldicott is a co-founder of N&R. Although he is now a respected silviculture instructor at BCIT, he is available to do some work with N&R. Due to his in-depth silvicultural knowledge and adroit, conscientious management style, Norman provides N&R with valuable insight to developing and evaluating strategies, plans, prescriptions, and treatments. Norman has 20 years of broad experience as a forest manager, team leader, and silviculturist, in southwestern British Columbia. Norman was awarded the status of SmartWood–FSC Forest Assessor in 1999.
